DAVID CAMERON’S CYNICAL MANIPULATION

On the day when David Cameron pledged “real people power” I have learnt yet again just how calculating and, yes amoral, he actually is.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Magna Carta Institue, former Tory MEP Tom Spencer told the audience that Cameron doesn’t really intend that the Tories will leave the European People’s Party, the centre-right political group in the European Parliament, for ever more.  His strategy for the future is a devious one and speaks of the worst kind of political gerrymandering.

Cameron has, of course, been very careful to promise that the Tories will leave the EPP ”after the European Elections”.  This is crucial for two reasons.  The first is clear: a political group in the European Parliament requires seven member states to be constituted as a political group.  If the Tories can’t find six others, they will not be able to form a group, so what has been seen as a promise to leave the EPP will be null and void.  Cameron is effectively promising something he can’t necessarily deliver.

The story, however, gets worse.  There is a convention that the all-important President of the European Commission comes from the political family with the majority in the European Parliament.  The Commission President is a poweful position and gives the political group who hold it considerable power.  Acording to  Tom Spencer, now Executive Director of the highly regarded European Centre for Political Affairs, the EPP may not continue as the largest group in the European Parliament, not because they will necessarily lose seats but because the Party of European Socialists (PES), soon to be Party of European Socialists and Democrats, may extend its reach to include national delegations currently in other political groups.

Given this scenario, the Party of European Socialists and Democrats may have enough members to be the largest group and therefore ensure a Socialist/Democrat President of the Commission.  If this were on the cards, the Tories, withdrawn from the EPP by “call me Dave, power to the people ” Cameron, would be in pole position to come out the wilderness of whatever political group he may or may not have stitched together and rejoin the EPP, making it once again the largest political group.  Hey presto, the Tories give the EPP the President of the European Commission.  Machiavelli would be proud.

If all else fails, Cameron could take the Tories out of their new home mid-term in the European Parliament, after two-and-a-half years when all positions are reviewed and can be changed.

Having heard Tom Spencer and listened to a number of speakers at the event he addressed, organised by the Magna Carta Institute and Brunel University, it seems clear that withdrawal from the EPP is not viewed favourably by many on the thinking centre-right.  David Cameron’s ”policy” which looks in line for a U turn, is obviously only for short term domestic consumption to keep the Conservative Party together.

Dave obviously has ways of reneging on what, in view of the obvious displeasure at the Tory plan to come out of the EPP on the part of both Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy, would be a deeply damaging policy for the Tories internationally.  I’m sure I’m not the only one to find Cameron’s machinations deeply amoral  - one message at home but a completely different set of actions within the European Union.

IMG_1316Perivale, Ealing, on the day after Dagenham provided an intersting contrast.  While Dagenham is still overwhelmingly white, Perivale is a model multi-racial community.

I canvassed with Wiktor Moszczynski, a Polish Labour activist for many years, and Tariq Mahmood, the Constituency Labour Party Campaigns Officer, both pictured.

As well as Poles and Asians, we met other Eastern Europeans plus Lebanese and others of Arabic origin.  It was good to see them all getting on so well in a tuly integrated area.

Anne Fairweather and I were joined by local MP Stephen Pound.

Thanks to Stephen, Wiktor, Tariq and Labour Party member is Ealing.

Both the local MP Jon Cruddas and GLA Member John Biggs turned out along with Euro candidates Anne Fairweather, Emma Jones and Nilgun Canver.

I was especially pleased to see John Biggs whom I have known for over 20 years.  Many thanks to him, John Cruddas and Dagenham Labour Party

ALVERING LIBRARY TO CLOSE – WANDSWORTH SOCIETY HUSTINGS

IMG00004-20090521-2025It was with both anger and dismay that I discovered on Thursday when I arrived at an all party hustings meeting held in Alvering Library in Allfarthing Lane, Wandsworth, that the lovely library is to be closed down by the Tory Council.  It was a super venue, peaceful yet well appointed.

Closing libraries is, I believe, very short sighted.  Libraries allow children access to books in a way which cannot be matched by other means and also provide adults with an invaluable service.  Where else would you get your Ruth Rendell and Ian Rankin?

The other parties at the hustings - Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Greens and UKIP – may not all have shared my views on closing libraries.  I am, however, sure that everyone liked this particular one.  My thanks to the Wandsworth Society for organising the hustings and for making sure the meeting was so well attended

The hustings itself was most memorable for the total lack of any real grasp on policy by the UKIP candidate Strachan McDonald.  The only thing he seemed able to talk about was the Little Englander view that we are better off alone, no matter what that may mean and how much it may cost.  When asked what UKIP MEPs would do on the environment and climate change he was totally at sea.  You would thought he would have briefed himself on such an important matter.  Or maybe UKIP really do not have amy policies on the environment.

Which brings me on to the Conservative candidate, number four on their list, Belgian born Jean-Paul Floru.  An articulate libertarian, Jean-Paul believes there should be no control over the free market, seemingly even when an unregulated market would endanger workers’ health and safety and increase poverty.  Mr Floru, incidentally, has close links with the ultra right wing LLD Party in Belgium.  The LLD itself is very closely allied to the Vlaams Belang, which can be best described as the Belgian version of the BNP.lib1

In fact, the table was very much divided into two – UKIP and the Tories on one side and the Lib Dem and Greens and myself on the other.  A very instructive observation, I think.

BENGALI PRESS LAUNCH

Image011Organised for the community press, we  had a fantastic Bengali launch of the European election campaign on Thursday.  Parvez Ahmed, owner of the Shamrat restaurant in Kilburn High Road, put on an event to be proud of, providing lunch for 70 – 80 people.  Thanks to Parvez for all his work and commitment to Labour, which goes back many years.  I remeber Parvez putting on a similar event during the European election campaign in 2004 and I know he has done very many other things for the Labour Party over time.

Following an introduction to the Euro campaign by Baroness Delith Morgan, who I have known for many years as we were both involved in children’s charities in our past lives, we were treated to the star of the show – a presentation to my colleague and friend, retiring MEP Robert Evans.  The Bengali community had organised a trophy plaque with a beautiful inscription thanking him for all the work he has done for them.  Congratulations Robert and very well deserved.Image010

The event was attended by a star-studded cast - local MPs Glenda Jackson and Dawn Butler, local councillors including  Lena Ahmed, Euro MPs and candidates Claude Moraes, Anne Fairweather, Raj Jethwa, Abdul Asad as well as what seemed like the whole of the Bengali media.

I enjoyed the curry very much.  Congratulations also to the chef!

HARROW

The bottom picture could hardly be more self explanatory.  It was taken on Thursday on the campaign trail in, yes you’ve got it, Harrow West.  With me is Councillor Phillip O’Dell, Deputy Leader of the Labour Group on Harrow Council.Harrow1Harrow004  My thanks to Phillip, Councillors Jerry Miles and Nizam Ismail and members of Harrow West Labour Party who organised the campaigning.  The second photo is fairly typical – putting leaflets though a letter box.  Such is the stuff of political accountablity.

BRITISH LIBRARY TO ARCHIVE THE HONEYBALL BUZZ

Great news.  The British Library want to archive parts of this blog.

I have just been told that the British Library is developing a collection of websites relevant to the European Parliament Elections in June 2009.  They intend to download selected websites once or more during the course of the campaign (from May to July) and subsequently make them available to the public via their website at http://www.webarchive.org.uk/

The British Library (bless them) recognise that the European Parliament Elections are of international interest and the British Library believes it has a responsibility to archive relevant materials for the benefit of current and future researchers. This project is an important collaborative initiative between European National Libraries which will set a precedent for international subject-based website collections.

I am thrilled by this news.  It’s not every day my, or indeed other bloggers’, pearls of wisdom are preserved for posterity.  Thank you British Library
