These are a few of my favourite things…

Nick Smith will make a brilliant MP. I have known Nick as an excellent Camden councillor as well as General Secretary of the European Parliamentary Labour Party. Above all I know and have worked with Nick as a campaigner. I have canvassed with him across London in all sorts of elections, and he has briefed me on behalf of at least two voluntary organisations (his day jobs).  Nick has great knowledge and infectious enthusiasm. Nick Smith always creates a team.

Have a look at Nick’s website. His biography is ideal for Blaenau Gwent. My favourite page is his “My Favourite Things” page. It is a  great idea and one I may copy, walking by the Thames, shopping in John Lewis on Oxford Street, mooching round Greenwich Market….

My very best wishes to Nick in the coming General Election.

PS I have just been advised Nick has started a blog, click here to visit it.

The Camden New Journal is not quite so enthusiastic. It reports that the Council’s Schools Chief has only attended seven of thirteen public meetings since taking his new job in Brussels.

I’m disappointed with you. You report this as current news when it belongs to 2005 and the same article says that Nick was standing down from the Camden position in the near future, and had only stayed on because his colleagues had requested him to during a difficult period of restructuring.
Whilst working in Brussels and Strasbourg his office was in Westminster, but that makes things less colourful.
Readers can view the old news you report as current at

Sorry to disappoint you Mary but I am not the BBC News and I don’t do breaking news. Current or not he still missed those meetings. I did not know that there was a statute of limitation on moaning about politicians who do not show up for work.
If you want a whinge which is a bit more up-to-date, allow me to tell you about the contents of my post today. Yes today – this just in. There was a letter from the local council about a meeting regarding parking problems but the first third of the text above the inevitable photos of the councillors was just general bumpff about how hard the council is working and how the Mayor is keeping his pledges, etc. Not specifically about the issue of parking. Clearly they were wasting our Council Tax on self promotion. It came in a ‘large letter’ but only contained one sheet of A4 and an envelope. They could have just folded the propaganda sheet, put it in a regular envelope and saved some money.
Another letter in the same post was from the NHS about encouraging people to stop smoking. Why is the government spending money to discourage the use of tobacco while at the same time spending our hard-earned taxes on subsidising tobacco production in several EU states?
At least the letter from the NHS agency did not have any pictures of politicians. In fact the one from the Council was unusual in that there was no picture of the Mayor, just three mug shots of local councillors.
Hard to decide which was scarier the photographs of the councillors or the thing on the radio earlier on about the German Foreign Minister pushing for an EU Army.
