I have received a large number of comments to my post on the Cyprus Rally in Trafalgar Square last Sunday. I have done my very best to respond to these comments. I very much want to see a solution to the Cyprus problem and I believe both Greek and Turkish Cypriots need to contribute to this. I have therefore responded to the comments on this blog from a position of sincerity. I find it unfortunate that so many of those making comments do not feel able to recognise my position and my desire to see an end to the Cyprus problem.
I wish to see a united Cyprus and support a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. I am not sure whether all of those who have posted comments on my blog agree with this. I suspect many of them wish for a two state solution with the north being an independent Turkish and Turkish Cypriot state. I do not think this is the way forward for Cyprus and I believe it would be a real tragedy if the island were to be permanenty divided.
As I have said in response to comments, I have visited the north of Cyprus on a number of occasions over the past nine years – from memory six or seven times, ie almost once a year. I have met with Mr Talat and previously Mr Rauf Denktash. I have also met Mr Talat in London and Brussels. I therefore take exception to being portrayed as anti-Turkish Cypriot and anti-Turkish. I believe both sides have a responsibility to end the division of the island and find it unfortunate that many Cypriots do not think this will happen, as was alleged by one person posting a comment.
Since I feel I have done all I can to respond to those commenting, I now believe the only sensible course of action is to conclude this debate as I cannot see it moving any further forward in a constructive and positive way. However, I hope you will all join with me in hoping for a solution in Cyprus sooner rather than later.
