Voting for my top 10 in the Total Politics awards here in traditional reverse order fashion are 10 to 6, 5 to 1 come tomorrow. This is my “Top Ten” as of now. Some blogs I link to are now not posting as frequently as they did. I will start with one that may be closing but I hope will continue in a different fashion.
10. Richard Corbett http://www.richardcorbett.org.uk/blog/
Richard is a friend as well as sadly an ex-colleague. Despite my obvious bias, the USP of Richard’s blog is its clear explanation of the workings of the European Parliament as well as Richard,s own rops within it. The blog is a resource. Richard was always in the forefront of the battle with Eurosceptics. I hope that Richard will return to a front line political role and that whatever he does he is able to continue his blog.
9. The Cowan Report http://thecowanreport.blogspot.com/
Would have been higher but Stephen has not been posting quite so much recently. Stephen is the Leader of the Opposition Labour Group for Hammersmith and Fulham Council. This is one of David Cameron’s favourite Tory authorities which is slashing services and depleting Council housing. Stephen reports from the front line and exposes what the Tories are really like. If you want to see a local version of what “compassionate” Conservatism, read this blog and be very afraid. Echoes of Shirley Porter’s gerrymandering in some of the recent schemes Stephen has shed light on.
8. John’s Labour Blog http://grayee.blogspot.com/
From West London to East London. John is a quintessential Labour activist, working hard and active in many causes. He is the authentic voice a of a worker who is not a representaive. Plus he’s a trade unionist to his core. The interface between the Labour Party and trade unionism is rarely covered in the media. John’s blog is fine citizen journalism. Relating the internal work of a Labour activist that any elected Labour representative will be familair with, but which might as well be a million miles away from any Westminster newspaper correspondent for all the understanding they have of how the grassroots Labour Party works.
7. The F Word http://www.thefword.org.uk/
More a resource than a blog now so could be enetered into website awards too. So much on it, that the blog is perhaps the smaller part of the site. If you’ve not visited do. If anything’s happening on femininism it will be covered here. Great comments moderation gives a good place for debate. No trolls here.
6. The Fabians Next Left http://www.nextleft.org/
Many contributors so the content and at times the quality varies, just like the Fabians past and present. Sunder Katwala is essential reading, and if it was his blog alone it would have been in my top five.
