Treading the streets in Wimbledon, I had a chance to speak to a few constituents on their doorsteps. I did my best to underline the differences between Europe and Westminster and what it will mean if less Labour people are elected as Labour MEPs. It was good to see Christine Bickerstaff again – we were both on the London Labour Women’s Committee in the 1980s.
Outlining local issues that are affected by the European Parliament – such as phone charges, sex ads in papers and trafficking – can rouse people out of the political stupor that is being caused by the Telegraph’s painful expenses extractions. Pulling each one out one by one…It’s reminding me of my dental treatment earlier this year!
Anyhow we soldiered on and I ended up in leafy sububan Finchley for some more campaigning and a local meeting in the evening. A great turn out there and lots of young people out campaigning with me on the doorsteps, which is always good to see.
Thanks to Alison Moore for organising the Finchley campaigning. It was also good to see Councillor Anne Hatton, pictured below.
