A HEARTLESS GESTURE?

The Governor General helping herself to a raw seal heart

One of the things that I am proud the European Parliament achieved in the last session was to ban the trading of seal products throughout the European Union.

Pictures of the the violent clubbing to death of seals, after which they are skinned alive struck many MEPs as unacceptable behaviour.

The Canadian Governor General Michaelle Jean clearly doesn’t agree with Europe’s ban because she has gone out of her way to be pictured eating a freshly clubbed seal’s raw heart. Combined with her her comment that it was “delicious” her actions have been interpreted across the world as a protest against the European Union’s ban. A pretty grotesque protest at that.

I am confident that the EU’s ban on seal products will mean much less seal clubbing and similar acts of cruely to animals will go on in future.  Should I be re-elected to the European Parliament both myself and my Labour and Socialist colleagues will be campaigning to ensure the ban is effectively enforced.
