ABORTION RIGHTS FOR WOMEN IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Louise Hutchins, Abortion Rights Campaign
Louise Hutchins, Abortion Rights Campaign

I believe that women must have the right to choose and access safe, legal and free abortions throughout the United Kingdom. It is unjustifiable that the Abortion Act which covers England, Wales and Scotland has not yet been extended to Northern Ireland. This leaves women in Northern Ireland unable to access a basic service afforded to other women in the UK.

The Abortion Act 1967 was never extended to Northern Ireland, which means that women in Northern Ireland do not have the same access to abortion as women in the rest of the United Kingdom. The present situation, with women in Northern Ireland treated as second-class citizens is unjustifiable and has real and serious consequences: thousands of women are forced into motherhood, illegal abortion or debt each year because they do not have the same reproductive rights as women in other parts of the UK.

Hackney North’s MP Diane Abbot has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) 625 which calls on the Government to relieve this burden and provide funding for women in Northern Ireland to access NHS abortion services in Britain. I support this and hope you will ask your MP to support it too. I recently met with Louise Hutchins from the Abortion Rights campaign. I have met with Louise before and she is a livewire, full of energy. We regularly bump into each other at Women’s events. She told me all about the work the campaign has planned to give this bill every chance of passing. Abortion in Northern Ireland is unlawful in most circumstances – it is only lawful where there is a real and serious risk to the woman’s mental or physical health and the risk is permanent or long-term. Consequently most women from Northern Ireland have to travel to England to obtain a private abortion. Unlike other British women, they are not entitled to an abortion on the NHS. That is wrong and I hope Parliament will change it.

Abortion Rights are having a fundraiser Celebrating Obama’s scrapping of George Bush’s anti-abortion Global Gag Rule and International Women’s Day 2009. An evening of laughter and fun!

CAMPAIGNING AGAINST SHARIA LAW

Maryam Namazie Atheist Blogger

Maryam Namazie Atheist Blogger

Last week I was pleased to meet Maryam Namazie. Maryam is a Central Committee member of the Worker-communist Party of Iran  but also runs a blog that provides a stream of news of what is really happening in Iran. Like myself she actively campaigns for Women’s Rights. She is the Spokesperson of the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain; National Secular Society’s 2005 Secularist of the Year award winner. It was interesting to talk with her about secularism from an ex-Muslim heritage. So often the subject is raised in the context of Christianity, but as the most diverse city in the world, London has many different strands of secularism. I was pleased to sign up and support the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain.

The Council’s manifesto says:

“Those of us who have come forward with our names and photographs represent countless others who are unable or unwilling to do so because of the threats faced by those considered ‘apostates’ – punishable by death in countries under Islamic law.  By doing so, we are breaking the taboo that comes with renouncing Islam but also taking a stand for reason, universal rights and values, and secularism.”

I particularly support their campaigning for a secular British state that does not favour or afford special privileges to any one religion. I would ask you to consider signing the petition against Sharia Law. Click here to do so.

SAVE SCHOOL MEALS IN ISLINGTON

Catherine West, Leader of the Labour Group in Islington is a rising young star. She has written to me about Labour’s campaign in Islington to save school meals. At Islington Council’s budget meeting on Thursday 26 February, Islington Labour will be proposing free school meals for all children at primary school and nursery, as well as a £100 targeted council tax discount for pensioners. Sounds an excellent programme to me. The Liberal Democrats aren’t listening. Instead they want a council tax policy that would do little to help any but the wealthiest households in the borough.
You can make a difference. Send Islington’s Liberal Democrat Council a message to let them know what you think by following this link.

Do any Liberal Democrats want to explain what the difference between Islington Liberal Democrats and the Conservative Party is?

The Liberal Democrats are trying to block Islington Labour’s free school meals campaign. Instead of supporting children, they want a tax plan to benefit the most wealthy, and they want to keep some of the highest executive councillors’ salaries in the country.

In a PR stunt, they have said they want people to email them and tell them which they prefer. Not very democratic is it? Many pensioners will not have email, nor will many of the poorer people in Islington. Most people do not have school age children so how credible will this “consultation” exercise be?

SEX TRAFFICKING VICTIMS WIN RECORD PAYOUT

Absolutely delighted to see this story. Congratulations to all those public servants involved in bringing justice. I hope there can be lots of publicity both here and in countries where women are being trafficked from so that this helps to tackle trafficking at source.

SWING TO LABOUR IN DOWNHAM

I spent yesterday afternoon getting the vote out in the double seat by-election in Downham Ward, Lewisham yesterday. The result was disappointing but the trend was good:

LD 1075, 1067 (39.3%, -12.5)

Lab 655, 634 (24%, -0.8)

Con 654, 632 (23.9%, +6.9),

BNP 287 (10.5%, +10.5),

Green 63, 62 (2.3%, -4.1).

Swing of 5.9% from LD to Lab since 2006.

A 6% swing has to be considered a brilliant result totally against the trend of the national polls.  It was a nostalgic day for me bumping into many old friends like Alan Smith, thanks for the tea and biscuits. Candidate Damien Egan is also Labour’s prospective candidate in Beckenham and Richard Hart had come over from there to support Damien. I met fellow LabourList contributer Dan McCurry for the first time. Thanks Dan for driving us around. We let Dan take the numbers so he could have a crafty cigarette or two. Hard working  Cllr. Sam Owolabi who represents the ward I used to live in Evelyn, was out joined by Dan Whittle who is the Young Fabians Trade Union and Elections Officer. Star of the  day had to be Carl Kisicki. I knew Carl when he was a Labour councillor for a neighbouring ward. He has since moved to North Staffordshire. He had travelled back especially for the election, brilliant commitment. Good to catch up briefly on City Hall in the Committee Room with Lewisham and Greenwich Assembly Member Len Duvall.

On the streets it was sad to encounter young voters talking about voting BNP, we need to tackle this and their vote of 10% seems to have come mostly from the Liberal Democrats. As I posted in my comments previously, my experience had been that Liberal Democrats in this part of Lewisham had been quiet happy to quietly pick up racist support. Good to see they ditched this approach in Downham by selecting Duwayne Brooks. I hope that principled Liberal Democrats like John Grieves can influence his colleagues who still turn a blind eye to this. Elsewhere in London the Lib Dems still play fast and loose with race for the sake of a few votes.

The result 20 miles away from Downham in Swanley, Kent where the BNP won their first seat in the South East Region on a 32% swing sends a warning. The swing is a bit exaggerated as the BNP had not stood previously.Richard Hart, Dan McCurry, Pauline Morrison (candidate), Damien Egan (candidate), Len Duvall AM They took over the UKIP vote of 20%. UKIP may say they have no formal links to the BNP but here was a ward where the UKIP vote switched directly to BNP.

Continuing the electoral analysis this was the third London by-election where I’ve worked in a row where the Green vote has been a small fragment of less than 100 votes. Is this a result of the recession, as the Greens have councillors in Lewisham? There were also a large amount of outs, presumably people were at work.

Everyone agreed Pauline and Damien had worked oustandingly and with a better national position they could well have taken this seat. Next time.

WHERE ARE MY PINK KNICKERS?

The pink knicker campaign day was on Valentines day.THIS appearance on a lingerie website is certainly a first for me! I was amused to see that knickers.com, a website that sells all kinds of underwear, has given me a mention after I spoke of my support of Indian women wearing pink knickers as part of THIS campaign for equal women’s rights.

As I’ve no connections with these people at all, I can only hope that they are going to be sending some free pink knickers to help the campaign? I’ll keep you posted.

TORY SMOKERS

Some Tories just can’t help themselves – see HERE.  Is it really so difficult to obey the law and not smoke in public places?

My suggestion for what the guilty Tories should do.
