I read Andrew Copson’s obituary of Harold Blackham founder of the British Humanist Association with great interest. I was discussing it with a Liberal Democrat friend who gave me an inspirational insight into Harold’s commitment to trying to make the world a better place. In his retirement Harold lived on the side of a hill overlooking the River Wye between the villages of Holme Lacy and Ballingham in Herefordshire. In his retirement he became the local deliverer of election leaflets for the Liberal Democrats. Apparently these were rather Conservative villages and quite spread out yet up until the 1992 General Election Harold was still faithfully delivering leaflets at the age of 89. Here’s looking forward to another 4 decades of political activism I hope!
Here’s a thought for today from Harold:
“Life is not presented by Humanism as something for our judgment, something finished, take it or leave it. It is presented as raw material for our creative use, a task for our responsible undertaking.”
Here’s to a creative and responsible life.
