Marije Cornelissen, the Netherlands, is a member of GroenLinks (GreenLeft), part of the Greens - European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA) in the European Parliament.
She became a member of the European Parliament in 2009 and currently sits as a full member on the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. She is also part of the Delegation for Relations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo. As a substitute, Cornelissen sits on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and is part of the Delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee.
She has been a member of the Borough Council in the south of Amsterdam since 2006.
Before joining Parliament, Cornelissen worked until 2009 as Director of North Holland’s Anti-Discrimination Bureau. She was a European Green Party delegate between 1999 and 2006, during which time she coordinated the dialogue between the East and West Greens of Europe. Between 2002 and 2003, Cornelissen was International Secretary of the GreenLeft where she participated in the Dutch demonstrations against the Iraq war. She was a member of the Green party’s board between 2001 and 2005, and was Chair of the Feminist Network of the GreenLeft between 1996 and 2001. From 1996 to 1997 she was an assistant to Nel van Dijk MEP, where she focused on women’s rights issues.
Cornelissen was born in 1974, in Leeuwarderadeel, the Netherlands.
