DOSSIER ON WESTMINSTER COUNCILLOR JP FLORU CONSERVATIVE MEP CANDIDATE AND FRIEND OF RACISTS AND SEXISTS

LLD-Tory link JP FLORU is 4th on the Conservatives’ London 2009 list

An interesting link between the Belgian political party Lijst Dedecker (LLD) and the British Conservative Party is Jean-Paul Floru, Flemish, former chair of the Leuven Liberal Students’ Union, currently a councillor in Westminster, 4th on the Conservatives’ London list for the European elections. http://www.floru.moonfruit.com/

Derk-Jan Eppink speaks with fondness about Floru in this article on the website of Dedecker’s think tank Cassandra http://www.vzwcassandra.be/categorieartikel/categorie/7/17/

Floru is also linked to Nova Civitas, the driving force behind this think tank is Boudewijn Bouckaert (LDD).

In an interview with the newspaper Het Nieuwsblad :

“Het Nieuwsblad: Once you were a member of the VLD (Flemish liberals). Would you still be a member?
Jean-Paul Floru: I don’t think so. Back then I was active in the PVV (precursor of VLD) and VLD and I have been the chair of the Liberal Students’ Union. I was a supporter of Guy Verhofstadt in his early years (back then Verhofstadt was called ‘baby-Thatcher’, added by interviewer). His ideology is not as pure anymore as back then and I deplore this. Nowadays, Lijst Dedecker is the only party that represents classical liberalism. I am certainly not going back to Belgium, but I maintain close contact with Jean-Marie Dedecker, Boudewijn Bouckaert and Derk-Jan Eppink.”

Of these candidates, four are controversial:

Jean-Marie Dedecker, for endorsing racist and islamophobe party members, such as Jurgen Verstrepen and Patrick Ghys (see below) Jean-Marie Dedecker, the leader of LDD, proposes to build boot camps [1] in Brussels in order to tackle youth crime: “It should be possible to sentence minors for a number of years to boot-camp jails.” [2]

-Derk-Jan Eppink, for his views on climate change, ethnic minorities, women (see below)

-Rob Van De Velde[3] was convicted of fraud in May 2009.

-Marina Cooreman, for her racism and views on trade unions.(see below)

LDD and racism:

According to Jurgen Verstrepen, prominent LDD politician, it was Jean-Marie Dedecker, the founder of Lijst Dedecker, who advised him to join the racist party VB at the beginning of his political career. Verstrepen would later join LDD.[4]

The founder of LDD, Jean-Marie Dedecker[5], does not see it as problematic to be pictured together with a deeply racist candidate for the regional elections, Patrick Ghys.

In 2007, Dutch journalist Arthur Van Amerongen was interviewed[6] on his book Brussel:Eurabia. The tv-interview was controversial as Van Amerongen made statements such as:

- “Brussels is a time bomb, there is bound to be a terrorist attack”[7].

-       “It’s going to happen. Look at what happened in the UK, look at what happened in the Netherlands.”

On the Muslim community in Brussels (predominantly of Moroccan origin):

-       “They hate Belgians.”[8]

-       “It is a very dangerous community. A time bomb.”[9]

-       “Moroccans are more dangerous than the Walloons.”[10]

-       “They hate us, Moroccans hate us.”[11]

-       “They want a caliphate, a government… an ummah governing from Baghdad to the UK.”[12]

-       “80% of all terrorist attacks are commited by Moroccans.”[13]

-        “Moroccans have to adjust to our ways, or they should leave.”[14]

-       “It is typically Moroccan to always defend their own community.”

-       “The multicultural society does not exist.”[15]

-       “They hate us, Moroccans hate us…they are frustrated…even the cultivated Moroccans I know in the Netherlands.”[16]

MRAX, a Belgian anti-racism NGO filed a complaint with the High Board of Journalism about the emission of this hate speech on TV.

Jan Vandenbussche[17], currently the chair of the LDD Brussels section, issued a press release[18][19] condemning the complaint from MRAX, not Van Amerongen’s statements:

“For Lijst Dedecker freedom of speech is important for democracy, because it is, next to having elections, the only opportunity to continually question government policies. It is bad enough already that the Belgian state founded bodies such as the Centre for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism[20] to limit this freedom to have a debate about issues that are of great concern to society.”[21]

Mission statement of the Centre for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism[22]:

The Centre’s task is to promote equality of opportunity and to combat all forms of discrimination, exclusion, restriction or preferential treatment based on: a so-called race, skin colour, descent, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, marital status, birth, wealth, age, religion or ideology, present or future state of health, disability or physical characteristics”[23]

Apparently, these are abhorrent goals for LDD. Moreover, Lijst Dedecker wants to abolish the Centre for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism.[24]

Marina Cooreman, 9th on the list for the European elections on:

-Trade unions in her blog entry ‘Trade unions or the maffia’[25]

“Lately, trade unions bear more resemblance to a clan of Sicilian partners in crime that rule using a mix of terror, blackmail and inappropriate loyalty.”

“If their demands are not met, they threaten with terror.”

“The right to strike should NEVER be more important than the right to work.”

-Ethnic minorities in her blog entries ‘Discrimination against the Flemish’[26]:

“In several –often left-wing – publications and reports I constantly hear about how ethnic minorities have to struggle against prejudices and often face discrimination. But isn’t it they themselves who look for trouble? Or at least provoke it?”

and in ‘Disadvantaged? I don’t think so!’[27]

“Let’s stop moaning about discrimination and being disadvantaged. Did we perhaps forget that criminals from ethnic minorities usually get much lighter punishments for offences and crimes? Let me remind you of ‘superhero nr 1’. In Belgium he was a known gangster and while being chased by the police he emptied his Kalashnikov on the police car. Result: an officer in function riddled by bullets. Result of the trial: acquittal, as it could not be proven this Moroccan superhero had the intention to kill!”

Racism from Vlaams Belang politicians who joined LDD:

Jurgen Verstrepen, MP in the Flemish Parliament for VB, currently LDD head of list for the region Antwerp (regional elections coinciding with the European elections)

1. It was the racist politician Filip Dewinter[28] who asked Verstrepen to join VB.

2. Verstrepen did not see it as a problem to remain in a party convicted for racism in 2004.[29] The party changed its name, but went on with the same people, making it de facto the same party. While a VB-politician, he defended VB as being a non-racist party[30]. This includes defending Filip Dewinter for calling Islam “dangerous”[31]. After Verstrepen left VB and became a prominent LDD-politician he published a book in which he claims that at VB congresses party members were singing Nazi-songs, such as the party hymn of Hitler’s NSDAP. [32]

3. There are pictures[33][34] of Verstrepen posing with racist (and also former VB) LDD-candidate for the regional elections Patrick Ghys.

4. Verstrepen opposed new anti-discrimination legislation and wants to abolish the Centre for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism[35][36].  Other opponents of more protection against discrimination were Vlaams Belang and professor Matthias Storme, a former NVA-politician who was forced to step down as member of the board of his party after urging people to vote Vlaams Belang[37].

5. The 2007 anti-islamisation demonstration. Verstrepen compared the Walloon socialist party PS to the SS[38] for limiting freedom of speech, after Brussels Mayor Freddy Thielemans (PS) banned an ‘anti-islamisation-demonstration’ planned on 9.11.2007[39]. The anti-islamisation demonstration was organized by the European umbrella organization Stop the Islamisation of Europe  (SIOE) [40], which includes the Danish Stop the Islamisation of Denmark (SIAD)[41], the British No Sharia Here and the German organization Pax Europa[42] Recently, the extreme right group Pro-Cologne (Pro-Köln) organised a similar demonstration in Cologne on 9th May calling for an ‘Anti-Islamisation of Europe’[43].The anti-islamisation demonstration in Brussels took place despite the ban. Vlaams Belang politicians Frank Vanhecke and Filip Dewinter participated and were detained[44].

6. Verstrepen, an islamophobe targeting muslims:

- In a blog entry titled ‘9/11’[45] Verstrepen links to a clip of the 9/11 attacks and makes comments such as: “You can see for yourself what Islam has ‘created’, or should I say ‘destroyed’?“[46]
- Verstrepen on the 2008 Mumbai attacks in a blogentry titled ‘Islam, Cancer of the World?’[47] From the US to Europe and Asia. Wherever there is ‘Islam’, there is death, violence, destruction and blind hatred. Now India is affected. They just had their 9/11. In short: the world is suffering from cancer and it looks like its name is Islam. We urgently need global chemotherapy against Islam to save civilisation.”[48]

Patrick Ghys [49]: member of the social council of Mortsel for VB, councillor for Mortsel, currently 8th candidate for LDD in the region Antwerp (regional elections coinciding with the European elections)

 -Racist

-A liability

-Campaigned for VB with this election poster of him and a gorilla.[50] The following slogans are on the poster:

“I have not forgotten about my roots…have you?”

“We don’t hide problems, we solve them! That’s why on the 8th of October we stand up to defend the interests of the true people from Mortsel!”

- In the context of discussions on the protection of a bat colony in the Fort of Mortsel (also known as Fort 4) Ghys put the following sick comments on his website about Africans posing a risk to public health:

“The bat colony in the Fort of Mortsel certainly poses a risk to the health of the inhabitants of Mortsel, as bats are known to be the predominant vector of the Ebola-virus! Imagine a bat like that arriving from Africa to Mortsel. Then Mortsel and its surroundings would be in deep trouble. How could such an African bat appear in Mortsel? That’s very simple. An African would propose a woman from Mortsel for marriage. What would he bring with him from Africa?… Precisely, Africans like all sorts of little animals. While the African would enjoy the one little animal[51] the other would escape and… bingo! What would the African bat see while flying??? …a bat from Mortsel of the Fort 4 type. Of course this would lead to them mating! Indeed, in Fort 4 bats can yield to all sexual lust, which would result in an increase of the risk to catch Ebola in Mortsel! The Greens even oppose to firing fireworks, as not to disturbe the animals while mating! After all, we in Mortsel have already known for a long time that the Greens and the Christian Democrats are not afraid of vampires and all sorts of other bloodsuckers. Think of Fata Morgana in 2006, with Dracula as the lead actor!”[52][53]

Lijst Dedecker’s tagline is ‘Common Sense’[54]. Any party with common sense would refuse a lunatic racist candidate such as Patrick Ghys a place on a candidates’ list

- Politicians from the racist far-right party Vlaams Blok have joined the ranks of LDD:

Jurgen Verstrepen, MP in the Flemish Parliament for VB, currently LDD head of list for the region Antwerp (regional elections coinciding with the European elections). Jurgen Verstrepen claims that left-wing policies “give amongst others sick pedophiles the opportunity to live their deviant lives”[55]

-Monique Moens, MP in the Flemish Parliament for VB and councillor in Brussels, currently on the candidates’ list for the Brussels regional elections. As she is at the bottom of the list, she is not likely to be re-elected.[56]

-Jo Goovaerts: councillor in Willebroeck[57]

-John Vrancken: MP in the Flemish Parliament for VB.

Left the party in 2009, when it became clear he would not get a good place on the candidates’ list.[58]

-Tony Soetaers, member of the executive of VB Houthalen-Helchteren.[59]

Left the party in 2009.[60]

-Joost Hijsselinckx : councillor in Ronse for VB, 17th on the candidates’ list for the 2007 national elections.[61]

- Patrick Ghys[62]: member of the social council of Mortsel for VB, councillor for Mortsel, currently 8th candidate for LDD in the region Antwerp (regional elections coinciding with the European elections).

-Judy Thuens: currently a councillor for LDD in Mortsel.[63]

-Gino De Cramer, currently an MP for LDD in the Flemish Parliament. It is not likely that he will be re-elected for the Flemish Parliament.[64]

In a 2004 court case: Vlaams Blok sentenced to be a racist party

The verdict on April 21, 2004: “Vlaams Blok is a party that continually and systematically incites to hatred. […] You are treating foreigners as criminals, evil people, parasites, fanatics that refuse to integrate and that threaten the [Flemish] people.”[65]

Plaintiffs: The Centre for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism and the League for Human Rights.

Defendants: 3 associations linked to Vlaams Blok[66]

Strictly speaking, Vlaams Blok did not have to change its name to Vlaams Belang. What was required was for them to make adjustments to their programme, by removing anything ‘racist’[67] from their party programme and publications.

Vlaams Blok changed its name to Vlaams Belang: This was seen as an attempt to make the party more mainstream. It is safe to say that this attempt, if there was an attempt at all, failed.

Why Vlaams Belang is the same party as Vlaams Blok:

  1. The party is still led by the same people. All people on the current party board were active in Vlaams Blok[68]
  2. At the party congress where the new name and logo was unveiled the then party leader of Vlaams Belang, Frank Vanhecke, said: “We change our name, but we don’t change our ways, we change our name, but we don’t change our programme’[69]

Currently, there are new charges of racism pending against Vlaams Belang.[70]

Vlaams Belang: racism and intolerance:

Antwerp shootings

In 2006, Hans Van Temsche, the nephew of VB-politican Frieda Van Temsche went on a racist killing rampage in the streets of Antwerp and murdered a 24-year-old Malian au pair, a two-year-old child and seriously injured a woman of Turkish origin[71].

The court case against Bart Debie, former VB-councillor, secretary of the VB-Group in the Flemish Parliament and security advisor of VB.

In 2008, Debie was found guilty of incitement to hatred and racism. The verdict referred to when Debie was a police commissioner in Antwerp. The court ruled that he encouraged his staff at the police station to physically abuse 5 people of Turkish origin out of racist motives.[72]

Vlaams Belang politicians (from the party board):

Filip Dewinter

Dewinter is the prominent VB-politician who brought in Jurgen Verstrepen to VB.

- Dewinter has been quoted and filmed saying that he prefers a “white Europe” [73].

- Responding to the question how he would react if his daughter would date a black man, a   Moroccan or a woman: “I don’t know yet which of the three options I dislike the most… If that would be the case, I have not raised her properly.”[74]

- In 2007, Filip Dewinter launched the anti-muslim song ‘Oh no, not another mosque’[75], protesting the construction of mosques in Antwerp[76]. The League of Human Rights on the song: “insulting, hurtful, inciting to hatred”[77][78]

Excerpt from the lyrics:

“Oh no, not another mosque,

they really are everywhere,

Trop is too much,

Allez, yet another mosque.

For Ahmed, Ali, Mohammed.

Oh dear,yet another mosque.

Islam, Quran, too much is too much.”[79]

Frank Vanhecke, MEP

In 2008, Vanhecke lost his parliamentary immunity after blaming ethnic minorities for crime in a local newspaper[80].

Filip De Man

“Islam is completely incompatible with European values.”[81]

“People are pretending there is some type of a moderate muslim, a muslim democrat.”

“ A muslim cannot be a democrat.”[82]

Positions (from the Vlaams Belang website):

In the section: ‘Is Vlaams Belang against LGBT people?’

“Legal gay marriage and adoption for gays or lesbians is as far as we are concerned ‘trendy’, foolish and dangerous nonsense, a bridge too far. This principled rejection has nothing to do with discrimination, but with our concern about a healthy society and a healthy education.”[83]

Current election slogans:

“Flemish money in Flemish hands”

“This is our country”[84]

One Response to Previous Campaigns

I strongly resent that you call me a racist in your article. If you would care to read the articles without bias then you would see that I question things that some people do but that I never – and I mean NEVER – condemn people on their gender, upbringing and homeland… I judge people on their actions. This is not racism.
Just like I judge the writer of this article based on the article and not on the party or fraction he might belong to.

It’s all too popular to label people without going to the trouble of doing some real investigating.

For your information, I left the VB, just because of their blatent racism!
