In fact there are many on the left who feel that the EU is institutionally neo-liberal and even neo-colonialist. The treatment of Greece with the neo-liberal policies which will almost certainly make the situation worse.
But I believe that purely pragmatic economics – neither left nor right – which eschews politically motivated bad economic policies – will say that it is simply not feasible that Southern and Northern Europe will have the same currency.
Incidentally my home country of New Zealand has long had a separate currency from Australia, and has been happy to see it slowly depreciate against the Aus.$. I see no sign of them wanting to go to war against each other, and this should be a model for Ireland and certainly for an independent Scotland if it so chooses.
