As many of you will know I am an active humanist and secularist – the small photo shows me with Keith Porteous Wood, Director of the National Secular Society.
I was, therefore, pleased to speak to this European election hustings organised by the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association and chaired by Andrew Copson, who works for the British Humanist Association on public affairs. On the platform with me were Warwick Lightfoot who is on the Conservative list in the European elections, Liberal Democrat candidate Jonathan Fryer and Green MEP Jean Lambert.
It was a well attended and lively meeting covering a wide range of European issues, maulny, though not exclusively, concerned with human rights. We were asked, for example, about Turkey joining the EU, the banned gay pride march in Moscow and the process for selecting candidates for the European Parliament used by each of the parties.
Wine was served when the formal proceedings had finished, a very civilised way to end an interesting and informative event.
