I make no apologies for featuring the work of Hope not Hate again, having covered them previously, here. Their latest message tells me about the BNP trying to use Jesus as a recruiting sergeant for them.
The BNP are preparing a high profile billboard campaign claiming that Jesus Christ would support their policies of racism and hate were he on earth today. You do not have to be a Christian to see how offensive this is. Statements like these are designed to cause offence, and to whip up tension between faiths. This is the reality behind the BNP’s politics of fear. Hope not Hate have set up a petition to oppose this. I have signed it and would ask you to please, here it is:

The BNP billboard asks a simple question – What would Jesus do?
I am clear there is a serious threat of BNP MEPs being elected. With London the most multicultural and diverse city in the world I am determined to defeat them. We need a good turnout and strong organisation. We also need local and national campaigning. I came across this passionate blog Kirklees Unity, and would love to see more similar local initiatives.
Nationally I am proud of the Labour Party leading the way with the initiative of setting up Fairness NOT Fear on its main website. I had a quick look at the other main parties’ sites. Now, I may have missed something but on the Conservatives’ site their latest Community relations update is January 27th, more than 2 months ago. Sadly, the immigration page is far more up to date. The campaigns page has nothing relevant. When Labour has just announced record low NHS waiting lists, how offensive and ignorant is a campaign saying Stop Brown’s NHS Cuts? What planet are these people who ran the NHS into the ground on?
The Liberal Democrats’ site I did not find that easy to navigate. I found this on communities. Plenty on immigration. Nothing specific though on combatting the BNP. Hopefully someone can steer me there.
Better still, both parties should follow Labour’s lead and have clear campaigning against the BNP.
